Peanut shaped spiky balls wakes up my muscles in the morning. When I wake up many of my leg muscles are stiff and reluctant to co-operate. They are uncooperative when I try to  stand up and they make me feel very unsteady. This problem has steadily deteriorated since 2013. Initially the issue was barely noticeable. Now the problem is awful especially in my legs. I must wake up these muscles so I can stand up from a sitting position. I wake up my leg muscles by rolling a peanut shaped spiky ball over them.

Let me be honest

So I am awake sitting on the side of the bed but I cannot stand up on my feet without falling over. My muscles are really stiff and they need to be made aware that I want to move and stand up. So how do I wake them up?  I roll the peanut shaped spiky ball over the joints in my legs. I start with my knees, rolling the ball several times on each side of the joint. Next its the ankles, top of my feet and the heel or Achilles tendon. To finish off I place the spiky ball under each foot and move it gently back and forth.

Obviously the joints in my hand are woken up as well which is not a bad idea either. It does not hurt me but there is enough stimulation to tell my legs its time to move. It is amazing what a difference this spiky ball makes to my life in the morning and its easy to use.

OK, I have just woken up

Back in the day I could sit up in bed, swing my legs onto the floor then stand up and get dressed. I didn’t suddenly lose this ability; my MS does not work like that. Instead something becomes a bit more tricky from one year to the next It’s a slow steady transition, like watching the tide level in a harbour change. Its only when I change my daily routine that I notice a significant change in my functionality.

Now I wriggle my bottom to the side of the bed before I get up. As I swing my legs off the bed  towards the floor I have enough momentum to push myself into a sitting position. Now I use the peanut shaped spiky ball to wake-up my muscles. I roll it over the knee and ankle joints of both legs several times. I then roll it over the tops of my feet then roll my feet over it from heel to toe several times. Lastly I scrap it over the muscles in my legs and thighs.

No spring chicken

I still can’t do the hokey-kokey but I have now got some control of my legs. I can now get dressed while sitting on the bed, getting up onto my feet more easily. The FES (functional electrical stimulation) electrodes must be attached to my left leg before I can walk. Getting dressed in the morning takes me about 40 minutes. Gone are the days when I could just wake up, get up and dressed in under ten minutes.

The benefits of spiky balls

  • They improve neuro muscular sensitivity, My time for the dreaded 9 hole peg test is reduced by about 30% if I rub my hands and fingers with a spiky ball for about 20 seconds first of all.
  • Spiky ball eases muscle stiffness, improve mobility and balance problems caused by my MS
  • They help people like me to reduce clumsiness
  • Helps with plantar fasciitis recovery.

Neuro physiotherapist

A specially trained physiotherapist at an MS therapy centre told me about the peanut shaped spiky balls. My hands are a bit clumsy and it is much easier to use than a spherical spiky ball. I really struggle to get dressed unless I wake my legs up first of all and this dos the trick.. If you want to buy a spiky ball then just click HERE
