Motability enabled them to own a car or a powered wheelchair To do this you contribute all or part of the higher rate mobility element of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
Motability is a registered charity
It has overall responsibility for the Motability Scheme, it was set up in the mid seventies. Since 1978 over three million cars, scooters and powered wheelchairs have been provided to help the disabled with their mobility needs.It is designed for the disabled and their own transport
Better quality of life
Motability opens up new horizons, now there is travel for the disabled. Things that were once difficult to do, such as getting to work, going shopping, doing volunteer work, etc. become easier. It offers a disabled person independence and a better quality of life.
The scheme is simple to understand
In order to qualify for Motability you must prove that you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement. If you are unable to drive car then the appointed driver needs to live within 5 miles of your home address. Mobility component of DLA
The scheme is simple to understand. As a recipient of the maximum component of the DLA you are entitled to a new vehicle. This is usually a car but it can be a new scooter or powered wheelchair and it can be replaced every three years. The vehicle, adaptations, insurance, servicing and maintenance are paid for by the Motability charity but you must make a contribution from mobility component of your DLA. It is usually 100% of your allowance.
Adaptations at no extra cost
There are only certain dealers who use the Motability scheme. After three years you can then trade the vehicle in for another new one There is no additional expense to you at all. It is perfectly possible to buy a more expensive model but then you must make a one-off contribution when you select the car.
There are even some cars available that cost less than your weekly allowance. You will receive the remainder of your allowance to spend however you choose. Whichever way you look at the Motability scheme, it offers very good value for money. Multiple sclerosis prevents me from driving, we already own a car already own a car, if the circumstances were different then I would be very tempted.
Advance Payment
Some larger or high specification cars require an additional upfront payment or ‘Advance Payment ‘. The Advance Payment is a non refundable deposit, it covers the difference between the cost of your car and your allowance paid over the length of the agreement. However there is a range of around 300 cars available with no Advance Payment. Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) is specially converted from a standard car in order to accommodate your wheelchair. This means that wheelchair users can travel while remaining in their wheelchair, either as a passenger or driver. The adaptations are done at no extra cost.
